Questions

VIN Lookup — FAQ

Where do I find my VIN?
Three common places: the metal plate at the base of the windscreen (visible from outside on the driver side), the sticker in the driver-door jamb, and your registration or insurance documents. It is always exactly 17 characters and never contains the letters I, O or Q.
Is this VIN lookup really free?
Yes — it queries the US government's official vPIC and recall databases (NHTSA), which are public domain. No signup, no payment, no VIN is stored beyond a short cache.
What does a VIN reveal?
The manufacturer, model, model year, body style, engine, fuel type, airbag positions and the factory where the vehicle was built — plus, via the recall database, every open safety campaign for that model.
Does this show accident history?
No — accident/title history requires paid commercial databases (Carfax and similar). This free tool covers the vehicle's specification and its official safety recalls.

Sister tool: Car Recall Checker (search by year/make/model without a VIN). Data: NHTSA vPIC + recall APIs (US DOT, public domain).
