Questions

Flood outlook — FAQ

What does this flood outlook show?
For each gauge it compares the highest river discharge forecast over the next 31 days with the median discharge of the past 31 days, using the Copernicus Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS) ensemble as published by Open-Meteo. A ratio of 2.0 means the model expects the river to carry twice its recent typical flow.
Is this an official flood warning?
No. It is a model outlook for situational awareness. Official warnings come from national agencies: Pakistan's Flood Forecasting Division (PMD/FFD), India's Central Water Commission, Bangladesh FFWC, the US National Weather Service, the UK Environment Agency, and the European Flood Awareness System. Always follow local authorities.
Why are the discharge numbers different from the gauge I know?
GloFAS is a 0.05° grid model, not a physical gauge. We sample the nine grid cells around each named location and keep the one that carries the river, so the absolute values are model estimates; the ratio (forecast peak vs recent median) is the useful signal.
How often is it updated?
Every 6 hours. GloFAS itself issues a new 30-day forecast daily.
