What happened

The 112 call centre registered the alert at 15:00 on Friday, warning of a multiple collision with possible occupants trapped in the cars. Firefighters from the SEPEI ultimately did not need to cut anyone free, but the scale of the response was considerable: a medical helicopter from the Servicio Extremeño de Salud landed at the scene, joined by a 112 medicalised unit, a conventional ambulance, Guardia Civil patrols and road-maintenance staff.

Two of the four occupants, all aged between 51 and 53, suffered mild polytrauma and were evacuated to the Hospital Universitario de Cáceres for thorough checks. The other two received medical attention at the scene and were discharged without needing hospital transfer. Despite the helicopter landing, the road stayed open throughout the operation and traffic was not cut.

If you drive on routes like this

  • Keep a generous following distance on motorways: at 120 km/h you need the length of a football pitch to stop
  • In heavy or queuing traffic, watch far ahead for brake lights bunching up
  • Wear the seatbelt in every seat; rear belts save lives in rear-end impacts
  • Know the local emergency number before you travel — Spain uses 112
